Archive - link destination

Hello again. I have a new question about the archives. I have an archive sitting inside a php include (my navigation menu) when you click on an archived story link it opens the story inside the page the archive is on. My issue is that as I have included the menu as a php include, the page opens in a bar no more then 200px wide and not the parent page. is there any way I can make the archive open in its open new tab?
