Just some small suggestions, might be do-able, might not...

1. A password-protect system where some news items can be hidden from anyone who you'd rather not have reading them (the boss, maybe?  https://cutephp.com/forum/style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif )

2. Gravatar support.

3. A way of linking to older news stories by month/year rather than the page numbers at the bottom.
