HTML is the general markup language that's been around for many years now. There are a few distinct versions marked with numbers. You will still see some HTML4 around, and often that's considered old-school HTML. HTML5 is the latest incarnation of HTML: There are a few new tags, notably audio, video, and canvas. These tags together are useful because they (finally) have the potential for the browser to be a rich media platform without requiring Flash or other plugin technologies.
